Remembrance

This painting is inspired by one of a selection of black and white photos I bought on a street corner in Bucharest, from a man who was selling bric-a-brac in cardboard boxes on the curb.

The impulse to paint other people from times and places so different to our own, stems from my desire for connection, which I fulfil through the process of imagining who they might have been.

When I first encounter an image that captures me, it is as though I go time-travelling in search of a story that brings them back to life.

By conjuring their personality through the vivid use of colour and pattern (guided by who I imagine them to have been), it is almost as though I am remembering someone I didn’t get to know.
